Description
Meet Shawn!
*Shawn is 8 years old and was adopted domestically. Like many of our Second Chance children, Shawn craves one on one attention and needs to make up for those early years when he was left alone for hours. His current family has several children younger than him and it seems to be a constant battle for his single parent to give him the quality time he deserves. We are partnering with his adopted family to find a better fitting home where he can soak up all the attention his little heart needs from a parent(s) who will not be dividing their attention amongst other young kids.
We are looking for a homestudy ready family with no other kids under age 10 to adopt him. If there are older children in the home, he would probably do okay with a sister around age 10 or older—and any boys in the home should be at least 13-14. Shawn has power struggles with the 10-year-old boy in his current home, but looks up to and enjoys the company of the older teens in the home. He competes with the two younger children in the home constantly, but does wonderful when on outings with just his adoptive parent.
Shawn has a strong desire to pray, go to church, and learn about Jesus, and we want to honor the importance of this by also putting a requirement that his new family to be Christian, church attenders, who will continue to foster this important part of his life (please no LDS or Catholics). If this fits your family and you’re interested in adopting him, please read through this profile and then write us back for his ‘additional info’. We have more redacted records to share with you. Write to secondchanceinfo@wiaa.org .
Shawn is described by his adopted parent as being “smart, handsome, active, loving, kind, and helpful. He loves to play Ga-Ga ball, swim, ride his bike, help younger children, play with pets and help with them, go to church, pretend to write, and jump on the trampoline”. He loves to play in water, but still has some hesitation if it is deep—he’s had a few swim lessons, but would enjoy continuing those. He does well with structured choices—at the residential home he’s currently living in, there are set times for games or tv, or activities in their room. He likes to know what comes next, so a structured environment is most comfortable for him. An interesting fact about Shawn is that he loves wrist watches. He takes pretty good care of them. On a recent visit with his adopted mom, she brought him a Spiderman watch. He can read a digital watch, knows the numbers and uses it to keep track of events.
Shawn loves to be read to—he will melt onto your lap and listen quietly for hours. He is an active kid who enjoys riding his bike and scooter, and playing basketball and soccer. He has a passion for fishing and will fish for as long as you let him! It would be wonderful for him to have a family member in his new home who shares this passion with him. Shawn’s favorite colors are red and blue—coincidentally, his favorite superhero is Spiderman! He wants to be a fireman when he grows up!
This is a private adoption, so a state or foster home study might not work. A state authorized private domestic or international home study is generally required. You will need to have a current, or easily-updated home study for this adoption.
Due to state laws, we are not able to place this child in CT, MA, NY, or DE. If you live in OR, you may need to travel to the child’s state to finalize this adoption. If you live in WI, please let us know, as the adoption process may be longer and a bit more expensive than what is listed in our paperwork. If you have never had a home study before, we cannot help you adopt this child. But we would love to share with you the process of starting a home study so you could be approved for a child in the near future. Please write to us and ask us how to get started! We are only able to work with US citizens living abroad if they are active duty military.
Adoption is a legal process so there will be costs associated. This adoption may qualify for the IRS Adoption Tax Credit.

*To protect the privacy of our waiting children and their families, Second Chance does not share real names for our waiting children on the Internet. It is our policy to only share a snippet of a waiting child’s details as well as the type of adoptive family we are looking for. If you fit the POSTED REQUIREMENTS, are home study ready (or can be soon!), and interested in adding this child to your family, please write to us for an honest, in-depth profile on the child including medical, educational, and behavioral information and learn the full story of why this child needs a secondary adoption. Our program social worker and program director have worked together with the child’s family to carefully set the requirements for the new family. These requirements are not negotiable, so please honor the needs of this child by not asking us to bend them for you.
