Shawn – Placed
*Shawn is 10. He was adopted 4.5 years ago from an African country. His family is seeking a new adoptive family for him due to his inability to properly attach to them.
He enjoys board and card games, as well as video games. He likes to read, especially comic books and graphic (picture) novels. He likes to play sports during recess.
Shawn is in the 4th grade. His teacher says he’s “a pleasure to have in class, although I would like to see him take a more active role in his learning”. This past semester he had straight A’s except for a B in reading and C in math. If you request the rest of his records, we will send you all of his report cards!
Shawn likes animals and is kind to them. He is also kind to others, and has never hurt anyone even when he gets upset.
Before being adopted, Shawn lived with a set of very frail elderly grandparents. He was the size of a 2 year old with obviously malnourishment when he was adopted at age 4. As a result of this, he has several common medical diagnoses associated with older child adoption. We will tell you more about these if you write to [email protected] and ask.
Shawn’s current family is hoping to find him a new adoptive family who is willing to continue his journey of healing from his first few difficult years. This new family can be a single parent or two parent-home with no other children within 2 years of Shawn’s age (he will be 11 in March). They would like the family to be faith-based, as well as willing to maintain some limited contact with them and his grandma in Uganda. They feel he would do best if he had a parent who could be at home whenever he was home, maybe a parent who worked part time, or worked from home. We feel he will do fine in a family who has younger or older children (as long as they are at least 2 years difference than him).
We have more information available about Shawn. Please email us back if you would like to see copies of this child’s additional records and learn more about him. Email [email protected]
We cannot place Shawn into a home that already has children within 2 years of his age (11 in March). For Shawn, this means no other children in the home between the ages of 9-13.
This is a private adoption, so a state or foster home study might not work. A state authorized private domestic or international home study is generally required. Due to state laws, we are not able to place this child in CT, MA, MO, or DE.
Adoption is a legal process so costs for the adoption are $200 application fee, $3500 agency fee, a lawyer in your state for ICPC and finalization ($2000-$3000) and travel to his state for a couple days to bring him home. This adoption qualifies for the IRS Adoption Tax Credit.
