Description
Meet Serenity!
*Serenity is 4 years old, turning 5 in Sept (2022). She was adopted internationally right before the pandemic hit the world. Her transition into the first adoptive home was difficult from the start and they had zero support due to Covid restrictions and shutdowns. When things finally relaxed a bit, Serenity had exactly 100 medical related visits and surgeries during her first year home. This did not facilitate attachment at all.
Serenity has diagnoses for cerebellar hypoplasia, mild Cerebral palsy and Deafness. Please see her videos below as they do a great job of showing her physical and communication abilities.
Many medical-related adoptions struggle with attachment since the child is immediately subjected to many new people, places and painful procedures, before a healthy and secure attachment takes place. Unfortunately, this happened with Serenity, and after working so hard to address all her immediate medical needs (which they did), her family has made the difficult decision to seek a new adoptive home for her where she can work on successful attachment without anything to inhibit it.
Second Chance has partnered with her family to find a new adoptive home who has no other children under the age of 9 and the ability to give Serenity lots of time and attention. They will need to have the physical ability to transfer her in/out of bed, bath, car, etc. Serenity will need to continue OT and PT either privately or through the local school system, as well as being seen by a children’s hospital annually (maybe more often for neurology). Second Chance also requires that an adoptive family have a current homestudy that will work for a private adoption. Please check with your homestudy provider to make sure you are approved for a direct consent adoption like this. If this fits your family and you are interested in adopting Serenity, please write to us for her full profile. We have lots of information to share with you about Serenity and our process for being approved for an adoption like this. Write to secondchanceinfo@wiaa.org .
Serenity’s favorite toys are books (especially touch-and-feel books and books about animals), baby dolls, barbies and toys that light up. She will imitate brushing her doll’s hair or give her doll a bottle if shown how first. Because she is deaf, she loves toys that light up and other visually appealing toys. She also loves watching tv and funny animal videos. She has started laughing at funny cat videos and it’s very cute. She also loves to play outside and will ask to go outside by signing. She loves to crawl around, lie in the grass, and look at the sky and clouds, and play with bubbles. She also loves to swing. Serenity enjoys any type of water play including splashing/playing in a small pool, water table and the bathtub. She thinks it’s funny when it rains and will have big belly laughs if raindrops land on her.

This is a private adoption, so a state or foster home study might not work. A state authorized private domestic or international home study is generally required. You will need to have a current, or easily-updated home study for this adoption.
Due to state laws, we are not able to place this child in CT, MA, NY, WI or DE. If you live in OR, you may need to travel to the child’s state to finalize this adoption. If you live in WI, please let us know, as the adoption process may be longer and a bit more expensive than what is listed in our paperwork. If you have never had a home study before, we cannot help you adopt this child. But we would love to share with you the process of starting a home study so you could be approved for a child in the near future. Please write to us and ask us how to get started! If you are a U.S. citizen living overseas, we may be able to work with you depending on a few details.
Adoption is a legal process so there will be costs associated. This adoption may qualify for the IRS Adoption Tax Credit.

*To protect the privacy of our waiting children and their families, Second Chance does not share real names for our waiting children on the Internet. It is our policy to only share a snippet of a waiting child’s details as well as the type of adoptive family we are looking for. If you fit the POSTED REQUIREMENTS, are home study ready (or can be soon!), and interested in adding this child to your family, please write to us for an honest, in-depth profile on the child including medical, educational, and behavioral information and learn the full story of why this child needs a secondary adoption. Our program social worker and program director have worked together with the child’s family to carefully set the requirements for the new family. These requirements are not negotiable, so please honor the needs of this child by not asking us to bend them for you.
