Meet Lydia who just turned 9. ! She is in the 3rd grade and was adopted domestically through the U.S. foster system. Lydia lives with her adoptive mom and dad as an only child. She was born to drug-addicted birth parents and lived with them until she was three. Despite those years being full of neglect, she still idolizes the life she had with them and blames her current parents for taking her from her birth parents. As a result, she hasn’t attached to her current family. For this reason, they’re looking for a new family for her where she can’t attribute past pain to them, and she has the chance to attach and thrive.
Lydia REALLY wants to have a big sister. And she LOVES animals, so her family believes the “perfect family” for her would have at least one older daughter (no younger than 11) and ideally, farm animals. They’d like a single mom or two-parent traditional Christian family. Because Lydia has exercise induced-asthma, they also request she not go to a family with anyone who smokes.
Lydia is generally bouncy, happy, intelligent, and energetic. She loves to talk and receive attention from adults. She does really well academically and has a great memory. She enjoys singing, dancing, and playing soccer and basketball. She is a voracious reader and devours chapter books about animals and history. Her mom describes her as being creative and artistic. She draws very detailed drawings and could one day illustrate children’s books. Although, her current dream is to write, direct, and act in movies.
Lydia is a good helper—especially with outside jobs. She loves doing yard work. She likes helping with the garden, but also doesn’t mind the hard work of digging holes to plant things or digging out bushes that need to be removed. Her family frequently visits a nearby farm where Lydia enjoys feeding the goats and grooming the horses. She loves being on the farm so much that her family believes that animals could play a big role in helping her heal from her past trauma.
This is a private adoption, so a state or foster home study might not work. A private domestic home study is generally required. You will need to have a current, or easily-updated home study for this adoption.
Due to state laws, we are not able to place this child in CT, MA, NY, or DE. If you live in OR, you may need to travel to the child’s state to finalize this adoption. If you live in WI, please let us know, as the adoption process may be longer and a bit more expensive than what is listed in our paperwork. NJ residents will need to check with their homestudy agency or an adoption attorney to see if their homestudy will work for this type of adoption. If you live in AL, we will need a pre-placement meeting between the child’s parents and a social worker after you are matched to a child. This will be an additional cost to you.
If you have never had a home study before, we cannot help you adopt this child. However, we would love to share with you the process of starting a home study so you could be approved for a child in the near future. Please write to us and ask how to get started!
If you are a U.S. citizen living overseas, we may be able to work with you depending on a few details. Please let us know your situation.
Adoption is a legal process so there will be costs associated. This adoption may qualify for the IRS Adoption Tax Credit.

*To protect the privacy of our waiting children and their families, Second Chance does not share real names for our waiting children on the Internet. It is our policy to only share a snippet of a waiting child’s details as well as the type of adoptive family we are looking for. If you fit the POSTED REQUIREMENTS, are home study ready (or can be soon!), and interested in adding this child to your family, please write to us for an honest, in-depth profile on the child including medical, educational, and behavioral information and learn the full story of why this child needs a secondary adoption. Our program social worker and program director have worked together with the child’s family to carefully set the requirements for the new family. These requirements are not negotiable, so please honor the needs of this child by not asking us to bend them for you.
