Meet our newest little boy, Vaughn. Vaughn was born January of 2020. He was born with multiple malformations affecting the nervous system – hydrocephalus and spina bifida, meningocele, lower slow paraplegia and pes equinovarus. He had an operation of the meningocele. He had the insertion of a Ventricular peritoneal shunt during his neonatal period. Subsequently, he has required implantation of a new shunt due to a cerebrospinal fluid infection.
Vaughn undergoes daily rehabilitation. His condition is monitored by a pediatric neurologist, neurosurgeon, and a pediatrician. Vaughn can turn independently from his back to his stomach and vice versa. He has good head control. He purposefully grabs a toy and holds it. He does not however manipulate objects according to their functional purpose. Vaughn demonstrates adequate responses. He enjoys personal attention from an adult. He laughs loudly when being teased. He reacts with displeasure when he is left unattended. He is mostly a calm child. No aggressive behavior was recorded. He can turn his head to the sound of his name being called. He speaks syllables and long sound combinations. Vaughn is served food by an adult and wears a diaper.
