Josiah – PLACED

Josiah was born in Asia and adopted this last fall at age 6.  Josiah is a sweet boy but shows signs of austism, perhaps “institututional” autism or perhaps traditional autism.   Josiah also has a vision impairment in his left eye. He can see movement and shadows.  His vision is his other eye is nearly perfect.

Josiah’s autism was not disclosed to his parents before his adoption. Josiah’s eye and his autism would have been fine with his adoptive  parents except that they have a biological son with autism who is barely a year older.  The developing problems  with two autistic boys so close in age in their home have forced them into the extremely difficult situation of having to place Josiah into a new home.

When Josiah came to the U.S. he was fully bilingual because for 2 years he attended a British/American school and lived in their orphanage.

It is not known which of Josiah’s problems are due to autism and which are due to his vision.    At first professionals in the U.S. believed his behavior was all a result of his vision and normal delays associated with post institutionalism, but because his parents have a child with autism who was diagnosed at age 3, they have a clear understanding and experience with autism.

Josiah is a sweet, compliant, obedient boy.  He sleeps well, and he gets along well with everybody Josiah is getting used to hugs and likes tickling sessions with his dad. He is generally an obedient, solemn, quiet child. He has no anger or temper tantrums. Although his family does not have pets, Josiah likes animals and likes to pretend animals, draws animals, and likes to watch animals. It is believed he would be fine with pets.

It is possible that Josiah has “institutional autism” and prospective parents would want to learn about that. Or he may also have typical autism.

This is a private adoption, so a state or foster home study might not work. A state authorized private domestic or international home study is generally required.  Due to state laws, we are not able to place this child in NY, CO, CT, MA, NV, ND or DE.

Adoption is a legal process so there are costs for the adoption. This adoption qualifies for the IRS Adoption Tax Credit. Contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.
